Email Mr. Kelly

Greetings Anthem Community,

It is my pleasure to be the Principal at Anthem School as it is an amazing community with great people!

Since 1999, I have been working in public schools as a teacher (5 years), an assistant principal (2 years), and a building principal since 2006 with Anthem being my third school.  The two previous school communities I served were Title I School with one being in the first year of state corrective action and the other school one year away from state corrective action when I took over as a principal.  And during my tenure at those schools, I was able to help them rise to a “B” school rating as determined by the state.  In both cases, the biggest determining factor of the students’ success were the trust and development of teachers as well as support from the entire school community.

With my mom being a career teacher and my dad being a career Air Force officer, my early thoughts in high school were to join the military, but after working with students in inner city Phoenix for my junior service hours, I fell in love with the education setting.  Since that early opportunity to work with children, I have learned many valuable lessons, especially in the areas of student mindset and resilience.  At all three schools I have worked, it has been important to me to create a safe and orderly environment to push students academically as well as behaviorally.  School needs to be a place for students to try new things, to learn from mistakes and not be afraid to make a mistake because all learning starts when someone does not know.

When not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family.  My wife has been in education since 2000, and we have three boys that are working to create their own paths in life.  One of the scariest things we have done is let our oldest son start a tradition of swimming Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge at fourteen years old, and our youngest son doing it at thirteen because he wanted to be the youngest of the three boys to accomplish this swim.  Swim Neptune’s theme for the swim is “Escape Your Limitations”, and it was an event where we all had to escape our limitations to be mentally and physically prepared.  The boys had many training opportunities, we had to trust the staff’s opinions on their readiness, and there has never been a regret as they continue to push themselves in open water swims as well as other areas of their lives.  We are grateful for all those that have been part of their development.  It has not been a perfect journey, but it has been a fantastic journey thus far.  Definitely, like no other.

I look forward to our future as we support students' academic growth, personal development and help them realize their potential to achieve their goals!

Sincerely,

Mr. Tyson Kelly
